I’ve got a feeling
“I’ve got a feeling”
When I originally started blogging I wrote a list of things I planned to write about each week – that list? I’ve just torn it up because the last couple of weeks I have been drawn to talk to you about certain topics, and this week after a recent experience myself I thought – this week is a good week to talk about our good old gut feeling.
My most recent experience was regarding a potential new client, right from the word go something just didn’t feel right. I couldn’t put my finger on exactly what it was but I knew there was something, I found out what the something was and my gut feeling was telling me what to do – but my human brain took over and I sought advice from a senior colleague. Guess what?! She confirmed my gut feeling was correct, I should have gone with it…… why didn’t I? Because despite knowing everything I do about the gut and it being our second brain I allowed my human brain to take over. Am I suggesting we run around doing things on a whim and saying “my gut told me to do it”? Absolutely not, but what I am saying is we should at least listen to it.
Gut feelings tend to be grounded in observation and experience, so it is important to notice if the gut feeling you have is based on this or if it is in fact wishful thinking because you want the outcome badly. Still with me? Tuning in to your emotions and bodily cues can help you practice listening to your gut and learn when to trust it.
So next time you get that gut feeling, take a few minutes to balance what you are feeling – is it wishful thinking? Anxiety? Based on unconscious observations? The gut and the brain are connected both chemically and biochemically and I will blog about this in the future because – well, I have a gut feeling I’ve kept you long enough for today.
